I Like Beer

I've never been a heavy drinker.  Oh sure, when I was young I partied with the best of them and made myself quite sick to my stomach on a variety of potions and libations, including the ever-present beer.  But I outgrew that phase early enough, something my stomach and head are very grateful for.  The majority of my time as a (questionably) responsible adult has been pretty much alcohol-free.  I'm no teetotaler, though.  I enjoy the occasional icy-cold beer on a hot summer day or every once in a while a 2 or 3 apple martini follow-up to supper after an especially stressful day.

Lately I've had a craving for the taste of a straight-forward, full bodied lager ale like the kind my dad would've enjoyed back in his day.  Schlitz, Piels, Schaefer, Pabst and even Carling Black Label - these are the brands that appeal to me and the lack of them being readily available at any of the local alcohol vendors makes me want them even more.

I wonder how much of this is really a desire for the taste of said brews and how much is more of a longing for a simpler, bygone era that the new millennium has left behind.  I've never seen Mad Men on AMC but given my nostalgia for that particular period in time I guess I should check it out.

Most of these brands taste nothing like they did back then, you realize.

And apple martinis? Are you sure a 19-year-old girl didn't write this? ;)

According to the Schlitz web site, they've gone back to the formula they used in the '60s. Mind you, the beers I drank in my youth were more rooted in the '70s anyway.

And how and why is a straight martini which tastes like perfume to me any better than something that tastes like apples but delivers the same kick?
