Lazy Developers Are IE's Best Friends

Dear large and small business owners everywhere,

Using Internet Explorer in your business does not mean that the rest of the world does.  Maybe the developer you hired can make a web site that looks and works great on your desktop in your office but don't assume that the rest of us who use different web browsers will have a smooth and pleasant experience trying to do business through your company's web site.

It seems as if the only thing keeping Internet Explorer around is the fact that businesses all use it and as a result web developers aren't as hard-pressed to make their sites usable by other web browsers.  If I want to pay my MetLife car insurance premiums online I have to use IE instead of my usual Firefox browser.  The same now goes for my pay-and-pay-as-you-go AT&T phones that my wife and I have.  I've been hearing similar complaints from my friends about other web sites that either look awful in anything other than IE or just plain don't work.

If you own a business and you're paying someone either within your company or outside of it to develop and maintain your web site then you have a right (if not a responsibility) to ask them to show you how well it performs when run in any other web browser than Internet Explorer.  I'm sure Microsoft would like you to believe that those of us who don't use IE are a small minority but do you really want to risk alienating any of your customer base because of their sales pitch for a one-size-fits-all Microsoft solution?

Sincerely,
A frustrated Firefox user
