iStillDon't

Continuing my previous post, here's a case in point...

I recently asked a friend who frequents his local comic shop (of which there is none in this neck of the woods) if he'd mind picking up a few titles for me on regular basis.  Rather than just say either, "Sure, no problem," or "Piss off, I've got better things to do," said friend, a devotee of all things Apple instead strongly suggested just going to DC's web site and getting an "app" to download their comics in digital format.

Keep in mind, this is the guy who put together my reasonably kick-ass PC for me so he's well aware of my PC-centricity when it comes to computing.  But he seemed very insistent and fairly certain that I'd be able to take advantage of DC's choice of digital format for the comics I wanted.

DC  Comics is anything but helpful in this regard, with only a blurb posted on their site about their whiz-bang iWhatever app that will let you buy and view their comics.  Nothing anywhere provides anything resembling real support and no one there wants to answer a few simple questions via e-mail.  So I went through the process of installing iTunes on my computer with only a faint hope that maybe this would all work out somehow.

Big disappointment and at the same time not at all unexpected - it turns out that the only thing you can get from DC through the iTunes store itself is the free app which will only run on iGadgets.  iTunes is NOT my favorite app for managing my media files, never has been and never will be.  So now I'm about to restart the system to complete the removal process of that application from my computer, all just because I wanted to buy a few funnybooks every month.

Apple claims to be all about choice and that may well be the case...as long as you choose to do everything their way on the devices they sell.  So I guess the choice is really just, "do it Apple's way or don't do it at all."

ComiXology is what I was talking about (http://www.comixology.com); they run DC's digital operation. They seem to be months behind on some titles, up-to-date on others.

You do tend to mumble and my hearing isn't that great so I missed that detail. And digital still lacks portability, at least until I can afford a laptop.

A netbook would be a less expensive option, or even the lowest-priced iPad...
